Historical Introduction

This unusually long introduction is intended to be both a short history of the considerations which, progressively, led to the development of Galois theory, but also a detailed overview of the content of this book. So the reader who just wants to discover and understand – without any proofs – what the various Galois theories of fields and rings are about, and where they come from, can simply refer to this introduction.
