Utilization of Wastewater Sludge and Poplar Trees for Remediation

In the present day, the scientific community is working on various alternative methods to combat pollution. Among these methods, phytoremediation technologies, which produce plant-based solutions, are widely accepted. The applicability of this method is classified according to the types of pollutants. If the pollutants are metal-based, the method is categorized into six different classes: phytoextraction, phytostabilization, and rhizofiltration. If the pollutants are organic, phytodegradation, rhizodegradation, or phytovolatilization can be adapted. Hyperaccumulator plants play a significant role in the implementation of this technology. Poplars, specifically, are used as accumulator plants in phytoremediation. Among these methods, poplars are preferred in phytovolatilization, vegetative cover systems (preventing the vertical flow of water to reach the contaminant underground), and riparian buffer strips (preventing the transport of pollutants to streams and rivers through water). Populus nigra and Salix anatolica are mainly used in the phytoextraction method. It is necessary to determine which of these plants should be used for the remediation of specific pollution parameters (organic or inorganic sources). Conducting studies to identify the utilization of accumulator plants in the remediation of specific pollution parameters is essential. The utilization of poplar trees and other phytoremediation plants presents a solution for the treatment of wastewater sludge and the reduction of pollution. This method supports the sustainable management of wastewater sludge and the conservation of natural resources. Wastewater sludge, a byproduct of industrial processes or domestic wastewater treatment plants, contains various organic and inorganic substances such as heavy metals that accumulate as waste material. Proper management of wastewater sludge is crucial for reducing environmental impacts and recovering resources. Phytoremediation, a technique that utilizes plants for environmental pollution remediation, offers a promising solution. Pollutants are taken up by plant roots and undergo biochemical processes or are transformed with the assistance of microorganisms within the plants. This process can effectively clean pollutants from soil, water, or air environments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential use of poplars, which are part of the Salicaceae family of forest plants, in the phytoremediation method, along with several other hyperaccumulator plants. Additionally, the study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using wastewater sludge in conjunction with willows for phytoremediation purposes. The goal is to assess the suitability of willows and wastewater sludge in this method and pave the way for further research in the field.
