Circular Waste Management System and Greenhouse Gases Reduction

Industrial revolutions caused permanent detrimental environmental impacts. The constant rise in mechanization, residentialization, and development has led to increased waste generation, eventually increasing the accompanying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Although resource consumption has proliferated, our throwaway lifestyles have turned the Earth into a “take-make-use-and-throw” culture. Waste creation has developed as the most pressing issue in societies. The rising gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and urban population have resulted in a rise in methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and other GHGs emissions from waste production. It is now evident that the conventional methods used to date are unsustainable. In addition, rising population levels demand more resources, making a circular economy (CE) necessary for trash management systems. An innovative system focused on the sustainable use of raw materials, available reserves, renewable energy, waste reduction, minimal pollution footprint, and prevention is practically required to transform civilization to generate more excellent value with less harm to natural resources. In this regard, the circular waste management system contemporary framework is seen as a viable strategy to aid the abatement of GHG discharges. Thus, this chapter emphasizes on understanding the contribution and functioning of circular waste management in reducing GHGs, highlighting linking sources, advanced approaches, technological innovations, and policies implemented to reduce GHG.
