We build on Maddy’s, ‘What is a foundationFoundation for?’ to discuss the relationship of set theory and category theoryCategory theory. We propose to distinguish the goals of ‘foundation’Foundation and ‘organization’, coining the term ‘scaffold’ for the latter. Then we argue that via various bi-interpretations set theory and category theoryCategory theory offer compatible foundationsFoundation and scaffolds with advantages for each.
