Birth, Evolution, and Splendor of the Inca Kingdom

When we consider the Inca myths, it is important to remember that none of the stories that have come down to us were written by indigenous people in their own language. The Incas did not use writing, and the texts which have reached us were written by Spanish chroniclersSpanish chroniclers or Incas whose native language was Quechua or AymaraAymara language, but who spoke Spanish (Roza 2008). In addition to the fact that there were no written indigenous stories, it should be noted that the available narratives are based on archives taken from khipusKhipu, the bundles of knotted strings first used to preserve information about censuses or tributes, which were managed by the khipukamayoqs. The narrative information preserved on the khipusKhipu was transmitted during public ceremonies (see Sect.  3.4 ).
