On-the-Field Management of American Football Injuries

American football is a contact sport that is the most popular athletic endeavor among high school and collegiate athletes in the United States. The way in which the game is played predisposes to certain unique potential injuries, some of which can be considered on-field emergencies for the attending physician responsible for these athlete’s safety. This chapter outlines the common injuries sustained in American football and their recommended treatment with a focus on the “on-field management” to effect optimal care for these athletes.
