Cricket is a highly demanding sport with a global footprint. Although it is a non-contact sport, it is not devoid of injuries. Apart from the several fatal accidents in the history of cricket, fractures, soft-tissue injuries, and long-term sequelae such as knee and shoulder osteoarthritis abound. In cricket, injury surveillance protocols have been defined as early as 2005, with updated definitions provided in 2016. Researchers have further classified injuries in terms of acuteness and chronicity, by age, gender, and country of play, as well as by form of cricket and position played. Countermeasures to prevent injuries, such as the use of protective gear, stretching and drilling, and balancing workload, have also been explored through research and implemented into the sport. The sport itself is evolving, as evidenced by the emergence and popularity gained by T20, a shorter and fast-paced form of cricket playing. Hence, research and knowledge production among sports medicine professionals must also continually be improved. There are opportunities for further study of injuries in women’s cricket, junior cricket, and recreational cricket, and for better data collection and analysis outside of Australia, England, and South Africa; moreover, closer attention to the biomechanics of batting, fielding, and wicket-keeping is also required.
