Fractures of the Knee in Sports Injuries: Avulsion, Osteochondral, and Intraarticular Fractures

The knee joint constitutes distal femur, proximal tibia, proximal fibula and patella, and their attachments. The spectrum of sports-related fractures that can occur around the knee joint includes avulsion injuries, osteochondral fractures, and intraarticular fractures. Avulsion fractures occur due to detachment of the bone along with its attachment. These attachments can include tendons, ligaments, or capsule. Osteochondral fractures of the knee can involve either the femoral and tibial condyles or the patella. The intraarticular fractures in the setting of sports injuries includes impaction and shear fractures of the posterolateral tibial plateau (apple bite fractures) in the patients who sustained anterior cruciate ligament injury and anteromedial tibial plateau fractures with posterolateral soft tissue injury (diagonal lesion).
