Snapping Hip in Athletes
摘要
Snapping hip is a condition where a snapping sensation or popping sound occurs at the hip during flexion and extension activities, like getting up from a chair. Generally speaking, snapping hip could be divided into two categories: medial (inside) snapping hip or lateral (outside) snapping hip. For the latter one, there is a specialized condition called gluteal muscle contracture. This chapter focuses on the pathogenesis of different types of snapping hip conditions, their signs and symptoms, as well as the effective treatment methods based on actual patient cases. Hip snapping in athletes is most commonly seen in jumping and running sports. The main reason is chronic sports-related hip injury and chronic strain of the peri-hip muscles. In cases such as this, contracted muscle tissue rubs against bony protrusions or subjects the hip joint to prolonged movement cycles with increased joint surface friction during exercise. This may lead the athlete’s hip to create a snapping sound during exercise which may respond favorably to treatment involving neuromuscular relaxation therapy.
