This chapter provides essential anatomical and biomechanical information about the human hip joint from the perspective of the practicing sports medicine clinician. Basic hip biomechanics as they apply to static and dynamic stability are also discussed. In summary, the hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint that in addition to rotational motion is subject to some translational motion; its labrum serves a vital function in contributing to stability and load sharing; four capsuloligamentous structures are important hip joint static stabilizers; and muscles that function at the hip joint help position the lower extremity during gait and act as dynamic stabilizers.
