Different Treatment Modalities for Upper Extremity Nerve Entrapments
摘要
In this work the most frequent nerve entrapments of the upper extremity in athletes (suprascapular nerve in volleyball players, the ulnar nerve at the elbow in throwers) as well as some rare cases of nerve compression are reported. Diagnosis is often delayed. Once diagnosis is confirmed, an early treatment consisting in reducing sports activity, correction of improper movements, and medical or physical therapy is recommended. If symptoms persist, a surgical nerve decompression can be necessary to reduce pain and avoid muscular atrophy. Rarely in an athlete with a chronic irreversible muscular paralysis, a muscular transfer is necessary. Therapy in the early or later stages of the pathology for different athletes depends upon the efficacy of rest from sports activity, patient age, and competitive level.
