Fractures of the humerus in athletes occur most commonly with peak effort or acceleration in a throwing activity or in a sustained exertional force. These fractures often occur in the setting of prodromal symptoms that may be related to a preexisting stress fracture. Consideration of treatment options should be taken in the context of the specific scenario an injured athlete faces. The treatment of athletes requires recognition of the importance of timing of fracture union and return to play, while achieving the best possible functional outcome and optimizing functional recovery while obtaining a stable result of treatment. With a shared decision-making approach and team-based care, the clinician and patient can achieve a durable and satisfactory result which also meets the expectations and needs of the athlete.
