Traditionally anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury mechanisms in athletes have been assessed based on physiological, biomechanical, and neuromuscular parameters, with very little regard given to the potential neurocognitive contributions. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a narrative insight into the domain of neurocognition in relation to ACL injury prevention and screening, rehabilitation, and sports performance. Within the injury prevention and rehabilitation chain, there is a growing need for practitioners to include more neurocognitive elements in assessment and training. The present chapter expands on the basic principles of neurocognition, how current knowledge of neurocognition relates to ACL injuries and how we can utilize practical examples designed with principles of neurocognition in sports injury prevention, rehabilitation, and assessment of athletic performance.
