Return to Play After Muscle and Tendon Injuries

Muscle and tendon injuries are common in sports and associated with time loss. An initial assessment and diagnosis will be decisive to determine the recovery time. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations are correlated with a medical assessment to grade the injury and plan the recovery plan to return to play (RTP) and prevent reinjuries. Muscle injuries are influenced by many risk factors to be evaluated. The thigh muscles mainly the hamstring and rectus femoris, and the medial head of gastrocnemius are the most affected muscles and result in the highest recorded time loss due to injuries. The most common overuse tendinopathies involve the rotator cuff (mostly supraspinatus), medial and lateral elbow epicondyles, patellar tendon, plantar fascia, and Achilles tendon. An individualized program is essential to improve the treatment quality, with a multidisciplinary approach to safely lead the player to RTP. Exercise-based treatment, frequent assessments, and pain-free progression are the main pillars of the player rehabilitation program.
