Augmented and Virtual Reality in Sports Trauma Training and Rehabilitation

Traditional medical training and education has relied on apprenticeship and didactic models where health professionals learn complex knowledge and skills in scenarios that are different for actual clinical settings. Virtual reality and augmented reality technologies have the potential to revolutionize the way we train medical professionals. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) bring people to simulated environments that closely resemble the actual clinical setting, thus improving the quality and effectiveness of medical training. These realistic and effective simulations can be used in surgical training for sports trauma surgery, anatomy education for medical student, patient education, and assist patient in rehabilitation. In this chapter, we look at how virtual reality and augmented reality technologies are changing the sports trauma training and rehabilitation and how they may revolutionize this field in the future.
