Sports injuries are among the most common orthopedic injuries. Knee injuries comprise over a third of lower extremity sports injuries. Nearly half of all knee injuries are attributable to sports or recreation. Because of this strong association, the development of an improved understanding of the biomechanics behind sports knee injuries is important for improving our understanding of subsequent treatment options and indications. This chapter will focus broadly on the most common sports knee injuries and their epidemiology, anatomy, biomechanics, common mechanisms of injury, and treatment.
