Remember the Mustard Club: Allusions to Sayers in Wider Detective Fiction

This chapter explores allusions to Sayers’ detective fiction in a wide range of novelists, including Richard Hull, Henrietta Hamilton, Susan Scarlett (Noel Streatfeild), Simon Brett and Reginald Hill. It argues that these novelists all engaged with Sayers as a means of positioning themselves within the classic detective fiction tradition, and of modifying the milieu and assumptions which Sayers represented. In the process, Sayers became more firmly established as a canonical figure of the genre.
