Roles of Biofilms in Biological Wastewater Treatment: An Insight

This study primarily explores biofilm formation and the various exopolysaccharides involved. Quorum sensing via AHLs plays a critical role in regulating gene transcription, influencing traits such as growth, virulence, biofilm development, bioluminescence, and exopolysaccharide production. The study employed small-scale sequencing batch reactors to treat dairy wastewater, which include both traditional SBR and sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBR). In a separate investigation, for the treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater, biofilm was incorporated into natural zeolite. Furthermore, MBBR (moving bed biofilm reactor) is recognized as an innovative alternative to traditional activated sludge reactors for processing both domestic and industrial wastewater. Given the diverse advantages and limitations of these systems, selecting the appropriate biofilm-based systems is essential for achieving the desired treated wastewater quality.
