Giving Effective Feedback and Grades

To assist faculty with learning how to give fair grades and useful feedback, this chapter starts with four strategies to make grading more efficient and effective, including separating grading from feedback; focusing formative feedback on drafts, rather than final products; encouraging student investment in the feedback and revision process; and using tools like rubrics. From there we look at how to give more useful feedback and help students learn from it; how to reduce bias in grading; and how to handle sticky grading situations like scoring participation, using curves, and offering extra credit.
