Gamma-Ray NDA Applications & Techniques

This chapter describes various gamma-ray measurement techniques that are used to perform nondestructive assay of nuclear material for nuclear safeguards and nuclear security purposes. Specifically, this chapter focuses on techniques that can be broken up into three general categories: attribute measurements which can confirm the presence or absence of specific attributes of nuclear materials, general nuclide identification measurements which determine which radionuclides are present within a given item, and quantitative measurements which are applications and techniques for performing isotopic composition measurements or for determining of the amount of nuclear material mass that is present within a waste drum or within the holdup that is present within a nuclear facility.
