Solid Waste Management and Sustainability in Deltas: Concluding Remarks and Outlook

While Deltas represent about 5% of the global land surface, they occupy over 550 million people (i.e., a high population density). The Delta area, which is characterized by flat topography, fertile alluvial soils, and abundant natural resources, is vital for human habitation. However, this area is subjected to diverse natural and anthropogenic threats, owing to climate change vulnerability. The delicate equilibrium of delta ecosystems is threatened as anthropogenic activities escalate (e.g., illegal solid-waste dumping), necessitating innovative solutions. This chapter includes the main concluding remarks on the evolution of waste management practices within Deltas, emphasizing the significance of sustainable approaches to balance the ecological and socio-economic aspects. As Deltas continue to confront dynamic and seasonal challenges, this book tends to provide a foundation for promoting resilient and sustainable practices in solid waste management (SWM) within these vital ecosystems.
