Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Following Stroke

Lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunction is a common post Stroke with symptoms that can impact survivors’ quality of life considerably. The type of Stroke and its location determines the pattern of dysfunction. Clinical assessment might include tests such as urinalysis, biochemistry, post-void residual volume measurement, renal ultrasonography and urodynamics depending on the indication. Storage dysfunction is primarily managed by antimuscarinic agents whilst incomplete bladder voiding is managed by intermittent self-catheterisation. Neurogenic detrusor overactivity can be improved by injections of onabotulinumtoxinA into the bladder wall whilst neuromodulation can improve both storage and voiding dysfunction. LUT dysfunction following Stroke is best managed by an individualised multi-professional approach.
