Coronal Mass Ejections

General properties of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), their kinematics, morphology, source regions, etc., are described. CMEs are giant clouds of plasma with a magnetic field within them that escape from the solar atmosphere and propagate through the heliosphere. Arriving at the Earth, the CME shakes the terrestrial magnetosphere, initiating geomagnetic storms and sometimes causing disruption to many of the achievements of the industrial and information era. It is emphasized that, most likely, CMEs are a continuation of the eruption of flux ropes observed in the lower layers of the solar corona as eruptive prominences. However, during the development of CMEs, a number of other manifestations of activity are observed. Some of them may be considered as consequences, while others may be partial manifestations of the main underlying process. These are coronal dimmings, coronal waves, radio bursts, energetic particles, deflection of remote streamers, and some others.
