摘要

Humanism, compassion, self-awareness and effective communication form the foundation for understanding and addressing medical non-adherence. Humanism in healthcare frames patients as whole individuals, considering their perspectives, experiences, and emotions within their social, spiritual, and cultural contexts. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the detrimental effects of isolation and diminished social connections, leading to mental health challenges and non-adherence behaviors. Establishing and nurturing meaningful connections with patients and families may help mitigate non-adherence. Effective communication is key in addressing non-adherence and practicing compassion. Traditional medical communication frameworks may not fully accommodate the complexities of patient-physician dynamics within individual, family, social, and systemic contexts. Self-awareness plays a pivotal role in developing meaningful relationships. Understanding oneself, including acknowledging vulnerabilities, creates psychological safety for patients and families to express concerns and experiences that may otherwise remain hidden. Trust-building is crucial in uncovering and addressing the underlying reasons for non-adherence. Narrative practices provide a means for both patients and clinicians to engage in self-reflection, fostering understanding of the patient as a person. Reflective writing helps clinicians navigate complex and emotional situations, forging professional identities grounded in patient experiences. Reflection is transformative, leading to resilience, compassionate care, and a deeper comprehension of the intersection between personal and professional realms. By actively listening to patients’ narratives and engaging in storytelling, healthcare professionals gain insights into the personal and cultural factors that shape patients’ healthcare journeys. This understanding facilitates more inclusive and tailored care, fostering empathy, trust, and mutual respect.
