Communication Education for Trainees to Enhance Adherence in their Patients

Effective methods can be used to help instruct trainees in patient centered communication to enhance adherence. Patient adherence is critical to successful patient outcomes. A well-recognized factor to improved patient adherence is effective physician-patient communication. Several collaborative shared decision-making models have been developed to enhance this communication. Physician trainees can benefit from education in these communication strategies to help promote adherence among their patients. Since there is little published data regarding this focused approach, we advocate a more general approach to communication trainee instruction.
