The Arrival of the ‘Metro’ Middle Class
摘要
Class consciousness is the basic fulcrum around which a working-class movement can be built upon. With the coming of large-scale digitalisation of the workplaces, certain important changes are taking place within the overall class structure of the society. Some of the most complicated changes are however taking place within the middle classes, especially with the rise of urbanisation in the society. This chapter argues that such changes in the spatial redistribution of the society have resulted in the formation of a migrant middle class in the IT hubs that the chapter refers to as being the ‘Metro Middle Class’. The chapter lays forward its differences with the traditional middle classes and the ways in which they become the ideal agents of propagating capitalist exploitation in the society.
