The Invisible Information Technology Workers

The IT spaces are not only formed by the formal IT sector workers or the techies as they are popularly referred to as. There are numerous services which are outsourced within these spaces, such as sanitation, security, hospitality, catering, and the like. These workers are as much a part of the IT milieu as the formal technical workers, but they rarely get the respect and attention that they deserve. Such workers provide a unique perspective into the lives of the IT workers because they witness their lives from a very intimate lens. The living and working conditions of the IT workers affect the kind of relationship that they share with the workers that they themselves employ. This chapter takes three such kinds of workers who work in the IT space—domestic workers, security guards, and sanitation workers—and analyses how their exploitation contributes to the de-humanised social space of the IT hubs.
