Quantum and Blockchain for Sustainable Healthcare Ecosystem

Electronic health records (EHRs) have been replacing paper-based medical records in the majority of healthcare facilities. The present EHR frameworks, however, have difficulties with management, trustworthiness, and secure data storage. In the healthcare industry, user personal data ownership and interoperability are critical challenges. Although blockchain technology provides various benefits like security, stored records protection, and immutability, its potential usage in EHR systems is still not well appreciated. This project intends to bridge this knowledge gap by developing an interoperable EHR architecture based on blockchain technology that complies with numerous national and international EHR standards like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Health Level 7 (HL7). This chapter describes the problems associated with interoperability of EHR based blockchain frameworks, evaluates the diverse national and international EHR standards, and outlines the EHR standard requirements for the interoperability. The suggested architecture has the potential to offer immutability, user-controlled record management without the need for centralized storage and security, and user control over stored records without the requirement for centralized storage, as well as safer ways to exchange health information for the healthcare industry. The work’s contributions encompass advancing knowledge of the possible application of EHR based blockchain framework and presenting interoperable framework capable of satisfying the EHR standards. In summary, this chapter can enhance the secure transmission and storage of EHR while safeguarding the confidentiality, accuracy of medical information, and privacy, thereby holding significant ramifications for the healthcare sector.
