摘要

In 1972, Congress passed the Education Amendments that included Title IX, which prohibited discrimination in Federally-funded education programs on the basis of gender. Title IX required colleges, universities, and high schools to provide equal access to competitive sports for both women and men. In the 50 years since Title IX was enacted, the number of women participating in sports has increased dramatically and the law has had significant effects on gender relations in the United States. Despite this progress, however, many issues concerning the status of female athletes in the United States continue.
