Feminism as Action: Title IX, Time Journeys, and a League of Their Own
摘要
Since its 1972 adoption, Title IX has conditioned the possibilities for women’s sports and participation in athletic activities in the United States. The movie A League of Their Own (1992) and the 2022 television series are analyzed in terms of feminism as action and as time journey. In addition, data from 10 woman-identified fitness enthusiasts are examined to understand the role fitness spaces play in the constitution and performance of feminist action. The chapter argues that feminism as action is highly complex. Journeys are central in women’s athletic participation and women’s sports take space and make space for feminist action. Sports and fitness activities not only change over time but also allow females to assert themselves as feminists.
