Implementing Sustainability Strategies and Standards in a Farming Enterprise: Esporão (Alentejo, Portugal)

Founded in 1973 by José Roquette and Joaquim Bandeira, Esporão is one of the most important wine companies in Portugal and one of the largest producers of organic wine in the world Furthermore, Esporão has also embraced olive oil production, focusing in their southern premisses of Alentejo, and thereby pioneering the production of organic olive oil in Portugal, with a innovative plan for corporate-led sustainability. In this chapter, the key actions and strategies undertaken to achieve higher standards of sustainability in the cultivation, production and comercialization of olive oil at the firm level are discussed.
