The Denomination of Origin of Estepa

The Protected Designation of Estepa ( https://www.doestepa.es ) was born officially in 2004. Estepa is a municipality in Southern Spain (Fig. 48.1) of about 190 km2 and with 41,500 inhabitants, where the cultivation of olive, both for olive oil and table olives, supports the socio-economic life and culture of its inhabitants, being the olive groves the predominant landscape (Fig. 48.2). Olive oil cultivation has shaped this municipality, and others nearby, for about 2000 years, as witnesses by numerous archaeological remains and sites related to the olive oil sector found in the area.
