摘要

This chapter introduces the basics of additional machine components students are likely to encounter. We limit out topics to the following: (1) Power equations. (2) Spur gears and gear train mechanisms. (3) Flat belts. (4) Roller Chains. It is critical for students to understand the horsepower (HP) equations. In particular, the students need to pay attention to units to ensure accurate results. Equation (7.1) calculates HP in terms of the speed, (rpm) and torque, T (in-lbs). Equation (7.2) defines the tangential force, \(F_t\) , (pounds) in terms of diameter, d (inches). Finally, Eq. (7.3) gives an alternate equation for HP in terms of velocity, v (ft/min). These equations are used extensively to calculate the forces and torques imparted by gears, belts, and roller chains onto shafts.
