Boils or Furunculosis

Furunculosis, also known as boils, is an infectious diseases that affects travelers frequently visiting tropical or subtropical areas. Furunculosis, is caused more frequently by Staphylococcus aureus, it is clinically characterized by abscesses centered by a superficial pustule, erythema, and intense pain, mostly on main folds and buttocks. Humidity, hot weather, and sweating together with synthetic fabric clothing favor this bacterial skin infection that can be more frequent if co-morbidities such as diabetes, obesity or other immunosuppressive diseases exist. Treatment includes topical and systemic antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antiseptic topical agents, drainage of abscesses whenever needed and improvement of the external hygiene conditions in order to avoid recurrency.
