Eutrophication Modeling of Freshwater Reservoirs Using Remote Sensing and GIS

Clean water is essential for both human and environmental life. Clean inland water supports a wide range of ecosystems. Eutrophication damages benthic fauna and affects resident fish due to external and internal nutrient loading. Lakes and other resources must be protected via conservation efforts. A comprehensive trophic status assessment is required for this aim to provide baseline data and aid in the development of regional policies to counteract eutrophication in that area. A well-planned information system is needed for mapping and monitoring inland resources. In-situ sampling and laboratory analysis are time-consuming and costly in conventional water quality monitoring. Despite these limitations, satellite sensors have long been utilized in lake remote sensing. Estimating Trophic State Index using Remote Sensing and GIS saves time and is cost-effective and simple. This chapter explains the reservoir trophic status index evaluation utilizing remote sensing and GIS using simple procedures.
