Monitoring Spatiotemporal Variations in Water Bodies of Amravati District, Central India, Using Remote Sensing and GIS

摘要

The present study is carried out in the Amravati district of Maharashtra located in Central India. The agriculture is the main driving factor for district economy. It is very much important and needs to monitor the water dynamics in the district; in this research paper, we analyze the temporal variation of the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) for various tehsils in the Amravati district from 2000 to 2022 (23 years). The NDWI values for each year indicate the presence and changes in water bodies and offer insights into the region’s hydrological dynamics. The NDWI values across all tehsils remained consistently negative throughout the study period, indicating limited water content and confirming the arid and semi-arid nature of the region. The NDWI values fluctuated from year to year, showing slight variations in water availability. Some tehsils displayed minor improvements in water content during certain years, while others experienced fluctuations in water scarcity. Chandur Railway, Achalpur, and Amravati Tehsils consistently exhibited lower NDWI values, indicating reduced water presence compared to other tehsils. Chikhaldara and Dharni Tehsils always showed the lowest NDWI values, suggesting the most significant water scarcity in these regions. The climate data (Rainfall) is also computed to know the meterology's contribution to the district's hydrology. The average rainfall for all tehsils is correlated with the NDWI data in order to see the correlation between the climate and hydrology of the area.
