Exploring Attitudes Towards Schizophrenia and Depression Among Emirati University Students’ Using a Vignette-Based Questionnaire

Background: This research explores the knowledge and attitudes of Emirati university students towards both schizophrenia and depression and identifies the gaps that need further investigation. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from one university with 16 campuses across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to explore students’ attitudes towards both schizophrenia and depression. The study utilized the Attitude Towards Disabled Persons Scale-O (ATDP-O) and two vignettes on schizophrenia and depression. Findings: The findings did not indicate a more significant social change in attitudes towards schizophrenia or depression. Students’ education level, relationship status, work status, and having children (yes or no) impact their knowledge and attitudes. Conclusions: The current research shows that there is a need to increase public awareness of both schizophrenia and depression. Moreover, the findings will have an impact on how mental health care services are delivered on university campuses throughout the UAE. Therefore, we recommend evidence-based strategies for improving the awareness and education of schizophrenia and depression among university students which we hope can lead to better outcomes for individuals living with this debilitating disorder.
