Pictorial representations, world chronicles and geographical maps provide significant indications of the expansion of knowledge in the context of intercultural encounters and the changing awareness of the cultural world beyond Greece and Rome. Ancient Egypt, not least through the hieroglyphic discussions and the travelogues of clerics, then becomes increasingly important in intellectual circles, which is reflected in contemporary architectural treatises and literary works that deal with antiquarianismantiquarianism.
