Due to continous mercantile connections with the Eastern Mediterranean, the lagoon city played a central role in the accumulation and dissemination of direct information about the Near East and the Levant. Venetian travelers therefore also made an important contribution to the exploration and reception of Ancient Egypt in Europe.
