Can Artificial Intelligence Mark the Next Architectural Revolution? Design Exploration in the Realm of Generative Algorithms and Search Engines

  • Karla Saldana Ochoa

摘要

In this chapter, we explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the field of architecture by enhancing the creativity of designers and architects. Six examples of commonly used algorithms, such as DALL-e (DALL-e, 2023) and Chat GPT (DALL-e), along with other AI algorithms, such as search engines, Self Organising Maps and Text2Forms3D, are presented. These examples highlight that, although AI offers seemingly infinite solutions, it is crucial to understand that its computational potential alone cannot replace designers’ critical and creative thinking. Instead, AI should be seen as a complementary instrument that enhances designers’ capabilities. Following this line of thought, AI and human designers should collaborate to address the subjective and objective criteria involved in architectural design. In conclusion, the role of architects remains indispensable, as AI cannot replicate essential aspects such as critical thinking, empathy, and intuition needed in a design process. While AI can generate ideas and facilitate the initial stages of design, the human element in architecture, backed by the in-depth knowledge and understanding acquired through architectural training, will always be irreplaceable. It is critical to monitor the application of AI in this field and to ensure that creativity and intuition are preserved and nurtured, as they are essential elements of architectural practice.
