Conclusion: Moving Beyond Gender—Single Motherhood at a Crossroads

This chapter concludes the exploration of the diverse experiences of single mothers in Thailand, emphasizing the intersectionality of the stigma they face, influenced by gender, class, ethnicity, and other socio-cultural factors. The research critiques the homogeneous categorization of single mothers and highlights the layered and multifaceted nature of their stigmatization and social exclusion. The study introduces the concept of “passive-aggressive social exclusion” to describe the Thai government’s inaction toward single mothers, leading to their marginalization. It calls for more nuanced policies and research approaches considering single mothers’ unique and varied experiences, promoting a deeper understanding and support of gender equality and social justice.
