Urinary Incontinence Detector for MS Patients: A Blended Intensive Program Project

The disease multiple sclerosis (MS) is causing immense stress in many lives today, and evidence shows a lack of technological advances to effectively treat its symptoms. One of the most common symptoms is urinary incontinence in female and male patients. Undetected urinary incontinence can lead to patient dehydration, resulting in fatigue, which is a prevalent and functionally disabling symptom for individuals livingm with multiple sclerosis. This chapter describes the efforts of an international group of students in developing a prototype device to detect urinary incontinence events in patients with MS, within the framework of a Blended Intensive Program (BIP). The study of wearable technology, embedded systems, and IoT allowed us to support the development of the prototype. Even though there was no implementation of a solution integrating machine learning and a mobile application, the study carried out allowed the respective specification for future developments. An effort was made to ensure that the device met the relative sustainability development goals set by the United Nations. The student group worked with the Scrum framework to develop a minimum viable product, and the results of their work, along with recommendations for further development, are documented in this work.
