Damaging Psychological Consequences of the Discourse

However politically correct a racist discourse may be, it has negative consequences on the psyche of the people toward whom it is directed. Research has shown that children are most suspectable and vulnerable to racist discourse. When subjected to racist discourse, they develop an inferiority complex, resulting in low self-esteem and lack of self-worth. They build defense mechanisms to dissociate themselves from their ancestors’’ ethnicity, nationality, or culture. The sanitized and politically correct discourse of Mill in current school textbooks, which remains racist because of the history that it has inherited, has profound psychological and sociological consequences for Indian American children that this chapter comprehensively exposes.
