Orthodontics and Temporomandibular Disorders

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex structure that connects the temporal and mandibular bones. Changes and/or perturbations in any of the joint components can potentially affect the joint. Although the definition has evolved, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are categorized as musculoskeletal conditions that involve the TMJ and the masticatory muscles and adjoining soft tissue structures. The specialty of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics is founded on the tenets of achieving a balanced and harmonious occlusion in patients with malocclusion. It is postulated that in cases of malocclusion, this balance will relieve patients of pain arising from TMD. This chapter analyzes the historical and contemporary perspectives on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and orthodontics.
