The evidence base regarding the epidemiology of this malocclusion is based on either cross-sectional or longitudinal observational studies. From these studies, it can be ascertained that the incidence of this malocclusion can vary between genders and patients with different ethnic backgrounds. The aetiology of this malocclusion is considered as multifactorial; however, clinical features of this malocclusion can involve skeletal, dental, and soft tissue factors. Knowledge of these factors can assist clinicians in determining treatment objectives and managing anchorage demands, which can influence the final clinical outcome.
