摘要

In this chapter, we explore the indispensable role of capabilities. We argue that these are foundational elements that bolster an organization’s sustainable competitive advantages when seamlessly integrated into its business model. The key to success lies in a thorough comprehension of value creation and appropriation within the business model. For capabilities to serve as wellsprings of competitive advantage, they must be Valuable, Rare, Inimitable, and Irreplaceable, while remaining firmly within organizational boundaries. Our narrative emphasizes the paramount importance of organizational knowledge, especially in its tacit and collective dimensions, as the primary wellspring of distinctive competences. Acknowledging the cumulative impact of capabilities on sustainable differentiation, we underscore how companies must anticipate and proactively cultivate capabilities, given their time-dependent nature. Further examination delves into the intricacies of updating organizational capabilities, navigating formal structures, individual and organizational habits, and shared values, revealing the intricate multilevel nature of this transformative process.
