DMDD and Bipolar Disorder in Children and Adolescents

  • Zehra Hangül

摘要

This chapter delves into the complex relationship between disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) and bipolar disorder, highlighting the ongoing controversy since DMDD’s inclusion in the DSM-5 in 2013. It explores the increasing evidence linking DMDD more closely with unipolar depression and anxiety disorders rather than bipolar disorder, raising questions about its classification. The chapter critically examines whether DMDD represents a severe subtype within oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or stands as a distinct condition. Emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive psychological evaluations, the chapter advocates for further research to ensure that children with chronic irritability and anger outbursts receive the most accurate and beneficial health services. The chapter underscores the importance of understanding the nuances of these disorders to enhance treatment and support for affected children.
