The Intertwined Relationship Between Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder and Intermittent Explosive Disorder

In the ever-changing landscape of psychiatry and psychology, we rarely find that diagnoses live alongside themselves, as if in a vacuum. Due to the nature and inclination of a diagnosis, it can lend itself to become more likely associated and intertwined with another disorder. This chapter explores the intricacies of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) and intermittent explosive disorder (IED) (Coccaro, Compr Psychiatry 84:118–121, 2018). These two disorders share common features related to emotional regulation and impulse control, making their study essential. The chapter provides a comprehensive understanding of DMDD and IED, defining their characteristics, drawing similarities, and highlighting differences. Emphasis is placed on the critical process of differential diagnosis, recognizing potential comorbid conditions, and effective assessment and treatment approaches. This chapter contributes to the ongoing effort to refine our comprehension of these complex mental health disorders.
