The Frailty Phenotype

摘要

The frailty phenotype framework, developed by Dr. Linda Fried and her team, marks a pivotal development in grasping the essence of frailty within the aging population. This framework evolved from an in-depth examination of the Cardiovascular Health Study’s data, which centered on the older adult demographic. Fried’s framework is distinguished by five core criteria: unintended weight reduction, reported fatigue, muscular weakness (assessed by grip strength), reduced gait velocity, and diminished physical activity. These criteria were chosen based on the conceptualization of a cycle of frailty, which leads to increased vulnerability for adverse health outcomes such as accidental falls, hospital admissions, functional impairments, and mortality among older adults. This approach represents a shift in perception, viewing frailty not simply because of aging but as a distinct, measurable medical syndrome.
