The southernmost time ball was at Montevideo. The northernmost signals were in Guyana and Suriname. The first known time ball in the Americas was at Valparaiso in 1843. A small time ball at Port La Plata in Argentina was replaced by simple time lights in 1911. A large drum at Buenos Aires was replaced by complex time lights in 1915. Brazil used an inflatable drum at Rio de Janeiro, replaced by time lights in 1920. A combined flag and magnesium flash signal was provided on Fiscal Island from 1921. Peru used a time ball at Callao. A flag time signal existed in the US Virgin Islands during the 1840s. Time balls were later used at Port of Spain, Castries, Bridgetown and Port Royal, with more extended time signal provision in Havana and at Curaçao. There were time balls at Guaymas in Mexico and at Balboa in Central America.
